Educational Aims of the Course

To develop theoretical and practical skills in strength & conditioning, alongside enhancing key knowledge and critical analytical skills to challenge current strength & conditioning paradigms. This will also include enhancing the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment, in roles requiring initiative and personal responsibility, decision-making in complex and unpredictable situations, and independent learning required for continuing professional development. Fundamentally, the programme aims to develop graduates who are able to embark on a career as research informed strength and conditioning practitioners and/or academics, whilst providing the capability to become accredited by the UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) and/or National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a critical understanding of the fundamental theoretical principles of strength & conditioning, supported by in-depth comprehensive knowledge of classical and contemporary literature
2.
Systematically appraise current periodisation paradigms and critically evaluate the requirements of specific contexts to effectively plan, design and review strength & conditioning training programmes
3.
Display a comprehensive and critical understanding of the practical implementation and limitations of assessment and monitoring modalities utilised to examine strength & conditioning practice
4.
Demonstrate a comprehensive and practical understanding of key technical models and the ability to effectively coach and communicate strength & conditioning practices to enhance physical performance

Opportunities for work related learning

Work-related learning will be a key aspect of this programme and will be built into the professional practice strand of the course, of which the module delivery team will have significant experience in strength & conditioning research and applied practice. Moreover, industry experts will be invited to give guest lectures on highly specialised topics. This module will build upon the fundamental skills strand taught in the three modules across semesters 1 and 2, and will give the students the opportunity to practise these skills in a real working context. As well as being supervised by highly experienced academic researcher/practitioners, students will receive on-site supervision via a work related experience, which will be self sourced across various applied working organisations and/or projects.
