Aims

To expand knowledge, understanding and practical experience of programming and coaching delivery for resistance training practices to enhance physical performance. This will include systematic appraisal, critical evaluation and a comprehensive understanding of methods to develop muscular hypertrophy, strength, power and speed, in tandem with contemporary issues in resistance training.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Systematically appraise current literature for implementation of various periodisation and programming paradigms, which are effective for the development of resistance training practices to enhance physical performance
2.
Critically evaluate the requirements of specific contexts to effectively plan, design and review resistance training programmes to enhance physical performance
3.
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of key technical models and the ability to effectively coach and communicate specific resistance training practices to enhance physical performance

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Needs analysis | Macro/micro level programming | Hypertrophy | Maximum strength | Strength-speed | Speed-strength | Ballistic strength | Reactive strength
Module Overview:
This module is designed to develop skills related to programming and coaching delivery of resistance training practices to enhance physical performance, through three direct contact hours per week. The module will provide the opportunity to demonstrate systematic appraisal, critical evaluation and a comprehensive understanding of the underpinning research and practice related to resistance training modalities. This will include specific in person lectures and practicals covering the areas of training prescription, planning and programming, technical models and coaching delivery.  Understanding in these areas will be specifically assessed via relevant examination formats aligned to the competencies required within both the discipline and industry.
Additional Information:
Lecture content and assessment formats will be aligned to the competency frameworks required for the United Kingdom Strength & Conditioning Association (UKSCA) and National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) accreditation processes, alongside being informed by key stakeholders within research and industry.
