Learning Outcomes
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
This programme has been designed to embed excellence in Learning, Teaching and Assessment, to provide responsive learner support, to support employability and graduateness and to develop the digital capabilities of students.
Programme-specific LTA Strategy: This programme has been designed to enhance students knowledge and understanding of applying technology, critical thinking and problem solving to engineering situations. The programme’s assessment strategy is designed to include an appropriate range of methods to enable students to demonstrate the achievement of the learning outcomes of individual modules, the programme of study overall and to ensure constructive alignment and enhance deeper learning.
Study skills are delivered within the taught modules. These skills need are developed and enhanced as students progress through level 6 to ensure that students develop the skills required in the workplace or to continue in academic study.
The programme features a combination of lectures, seminars, discussions, group tutorials, student presentations and 1:1 academic tutorials. Learning will be facilitated through a selection of practical demonstrations, peer practice, lectures, seminars, workshops, presentations, essays, reports, reflective log, case studies, debates, tutorials, interactive sessions and role play, work based support and on-line support.
Assessment is based on a combination of project work, report writing, written assignments, presentations and examinations. Examinations make up a small minority of the assessment by value.

If you have completed an HND Engineering at Nelson and Colne College you will have all the required prior knowledge and would normally have covered the following programme learning outcomes;
- Understand, select and apply appropriate scientific and mathematical techniques, procedures and methods to undertake engineering tasks
- Demonstrate an understanding of the need to work within the constraints of common business, commercial and financial environments
- Demonstrate a sound theoretical understanding of key mathematical and scientific principles relevant to engineering
- Identify problems and apply appropriate methods to identify causes and achieve satisfactory solutions
- Identify, organise and use resources effectively to complete tasks, with consideration for cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact.
- Contribute to the design and development of solutions to engineering problems.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the environmental impact of engineers' work, and the need to promote sustainable development.
- Understand the ethical issues that may arise in their role and carry out their responsibilities in an ethical manner.
- Apply research methods and skills in engineering
- Communicate appropriately with others in person, in writing and through ICT

- Work effectively with colleagues, clients, suppliers or the public
- Demonstrate personal and social skills and awareness of diversity and inclusion issues
If you gained an HND elsewhere or are offering other entry qualifications you may apply and will be considered on the basis of both the extent and level of your prior achievement and on the subject knowledge gained.
Normally, you will need an overall Merit at HND or a Foundation Degree average mark of 50% or higher. If you have an HND with an overall Pass grade or a Foundation Degree with and average mark below 50% but can show the ability and commitment necessary to be successful at level 6 you may be admitted through the Non-standard Admissions Process.
