Aims

This module aims to develop an understanding of the management of projects and of carrying out an advanced engineering project to a professional standard.

Projects will allow students to synthesise the knowledge gained from their previous studies at levels 4 & 5 and to apply this to generate, test and evaluate a solution to a real-world engineering problem related to their chosen disciplines.

Students will also gain an understanding of the expectations of project documentation.

The topic of each project will be negotiated between the student and the module leader.  It is a requirement that the topic and content of each student’s project must reflect the title of that student’s target award. Topics may be set by staff, be suggested by the student or arise from the student's employment.  In all cases, the project topic and specifications must be approved in advance by the module leader and must provide for:

  • the solution of a realistic engineering problem that is relevant to the student’s target award and that the student has not previously addressed
  • the discovery of information / gain of skills beyond the taught syllabus of this award and the student’s prior qualifications
  • the production of a clearly defined solution or artefact the performance of which can be evaluated against the initial design specification.
  • an assessment of the commercial potential of the project in terms of project costs (time, components, etc.) and commercial benefit (costs: manufacturing costs of products / cost of providing services / cost of implementation, benefits: potential sales revenues / cost savings)

Learning Outcomes

1.
Understand and apply the theories and practice of managing in an engineering context.
2.
Create original solutions based on initial design specifications and implement a project using project management skills to continuously evaluate and make appropriate changes to the project plan and specifications.
3.
Conduct background research and apply this to project specification and design
4.
Produce a report and presentations in appropriate forms using correct technical English grammar and spelling which evaluates relevant legal, moral and ethical issues around the project and appropriately communicate their content to peers and other key stakeholders.
5.
Critically evaluate your project work in terms of outcomes, process and commercial potential.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Project management theory and skills

Product and project costing

Literature review and background research skills

Research methods in engineering

Selection of a negotiated project topic and development of a project brief.  Project topics must lie within the discipline of the student’s target award.

Consideration of the ethics of the project topics and/or proposed artefact(s).  Obtain ethical approval for project if there is a prima facie case that there are grounds for any ethical concerns.

Consideration of applicable health and safety, diversity, inclusion, cultural, societal, environmental and commercial matters, codes of practice and industry standards.

Carrying out an engineering project: propose and select between multiple possible design options to solve a broady-specified problem; evaluate and minimise any adverse environmental and societal impact of potential solutions; design and build an appropriate solution.

Testing and evaluation of product / artefact / solution produced against design criteria

Identification of potential risks (e.g. product safety, commercial risk, timescale slippage, security, etc.) and their mitigation.

Reporting and presentation skills

Commercial assessment of product / artefact / solution produced

Create and maintain a personal CPD log
