Educational Aims of the Course

To develop apprentices to become autonomous, reflective advanced clinical practitioners who will be able to systematically utilise advanced levels of knowledge in order to manage clinical case loads and respond to complex challenges. To provide a conducive, dynamic learning environment which enables the apprentice to meet challenges flexibly and creatively to become a proficient, confident, safe and accountable advanced clinical practitioner, whose practice is underpinned by a robust evidence base to ensure fitness for practice. To equip the apprentices with the essential skills to be able to assess, examine, diagnose and manage episodes of care independently, providing care across a spectrum of illness, minor, acute and chronic within the secondary and or community setting.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and critical understanding of advanced clinical practice within a variety of health care settings.
2.
Critically analyse the factors that are imperative to organisational development and design.
3.
Critically evaluate the various models of practice in healthcare and non-healthcare environments demonstrating the strengths and weaknesses of their use.
4.
Appraise the boundaries of advanced clinical professional roles.
5.
Articulate the legal and ethical frameworks in which the Advanced Clinical Practitioner works.
6.
Explore, critically review and extend a coherent body of knowledge, which is applied systematically within the clinical setting.
7.
Employ appropriate decision making and problem solving in situations of uncertainty and complexity.
8.
Demonstrate emotional intelligence, critical reasoning, creativity and originality of thought during practice.
9.
Recognise, extend and advance the boundaries of the professional role through horizon scanning activities.

Critically analyse quality systems and processes within the practice setting, initiating activities for improvement.

Supervise the clinical practice of the team and ensure safety through risk assessment and management.

Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the pathogenesis of disease processes, integration of the clinical manifestations of disease to the relevant pathophysiological mechanisms, and the subsequent relationships to assessment, diagnosis and clinical management.

Appraise the multi-disciplinary perspectives found in the workplace to enhance problem solving through debate.

Critically examine and analyse a variety of issues intrinsic to the advanced clinical practice role development

Critically analyse how comparative health policy influences the local health services, and determine their own influencing of the health policy agenda at national, regional and local levels.

Interpret data and application of this in making strategic choices to influence policy and processes.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Adapt to the teaching learning and assessment methods which are specific for each module. Follow a series of assessments that are designed in such a way as to ensure the apprentice can fully benefit from the potential to enhance their knowledge and skills. Engage with interactive lectures, seminars, tutorials; on-line discussion boards; problem-based learning exercises; self-directed and reflective learning; reflective practice, clinical supervision and case presentations, student-led presentations, individual and group tutorials Effectively complete oral and written presentations, unseen examinations, written assignments, OSCE examination, clinical evaluation, open book examination, clinical portfolio, clinical competencies

Opportunities for work related learning

All apprentices will be employed in the context of an advanced clinical practice setting secondary and or community. It is the role of the employer to ensure suitable mentors are identified for the apprentices. Practice based mentors will be identified and will play a role in sign-off of the ACP (Adult) capabilities for Pillar 1, 2, 3 and 4. They will be supported via tripartite tutorials between the apprentice, employer and LJMU. The development of an advanced clinical practice portfolio and competency record will complement and strategically support the ongoing process of practice learning.

Apprentices all need to complete mandatory training in Safeguarding, British Values and Prevent before they can undertake the End Point Assessment. Generic, mandatory online training programmes will offered to apprentices and this may be supplemented by additional training that is specific to the programme.
