Educational Aims of the Course

To enable staff to develop a critical understanding of pedagogical research design and operation.

Learning Outcomes

Critically examine the impact of methodology on primary research in higher education.

Critically reflect on the ethical dimensions of primary research in higher education.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

This module aims to help staff develop a critical understanding of the design and operation of primary research associated with academic practice in higher education. It supports the development of a research plan by exploring key debates, practices, and approaches in higher education research.  This module will support the development of a plan for research by exploring key debates, practices and approaches to higher education research.  Assessment: Presentation of the background and rationale for research in an area of Higher Education practice (40%); A research proposal associated with an area of Higher Education practice (60%).

Opportunities for work related learning

The programme is designed to support teaching staff who are currently working in a Higher Education environment. It is, therefore, fundamentally associated with the workplace and practice. All teaching is rooted in an exploration of the relationship between theory and practice and the programme's assessment strategy focuses on assessment tasks that have direct relevance to practitioners
