Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The students will be senior managers in work who are undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate in Hospital Management alongside full-time jobs. So, as well as being careful with assessment loading, the programme team have made sure that, even within a 60C programme, there is variety in the type of assessment, and that the activity is directly useful to the senior leader in their daily work. Assessments are broken down into smaller tasks spread throughout the duration of the programme, rather than being weighted to the end of each module. Modules are block taught in the pattern shown in the attached document "Circle Registered Manager Timelines 2 intakes".

Circle will be offering to deliver Guest Lectures, where keynote speakers in the students' own organisation can provide further contextual and expert knowledge and experience. At the end of the programme, learners research and present a business case. This Capstone activity has been included in the last four cohorts of the the Towards Outstanding Programme (the non award bearing programme that LBS has run for Circle), and is well proven, with Circle Board reviewing all the output and selecting the best cases for capital investment,

The assessment methodology, as set out above, provides the opportunities for participants to demonstrate knowledge and skills. In addition to this a 'flipped learning' approach will also be encouraged, providing content prior to the workshop sessions using the VLE, this approach brings the focus onto discussion, peer learning and application, enabling the application of skill development.

There will be opportunities for students to undertake classroom activities which will help them prepare for the module assessments, thus receiving formative feedback at each stage of the programme, and helping to support them even when the type of assessment keeps changing. There will be an opportunity to discuss any assessment with each module and programme lead.

Opportunities for work related learning

The programme conforms to the QAA Masters in Business and Management requirements for a specialist career development programme (Type 4) 'to enable career development for those with work experience within the area of focus'  'on which the learning process should build". At the centre of the programme philosophy is the notion that learning is a social and collaborative process, so providing the Circle students with the opportunities to network and to share their expertise across the various hospital sites is a key part of the programme. Learners bring their experiences from their own area of expertise with them, and apply knowledge and skills in practice whilst reflecting on their expertise to improve their performance. They will be able to 'ground their new knowledge and understanding within the base of their professional experience.'  The students are all senior managers in work and are undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate in Hospital Management alongside full-time jobs, and all the assessments are work-based.
