Educational Aims of the Course

The programme aims to provide learners from a law enforcement background with enhanced leadership and management knowledge, skills, and behaviours aligned to the Senior Leader Apprenticeship.  These will be focused on creating strong and resilient workforce relationships, forming an inclusive, values-driven organisational culture, and improving public trust and confidence through innovative communication techniques.  Learners will critically evaluate the concepts, methods, and tools necessary to enhance service provision, community engagement and stakeholder collaboration and to build strong partnerships and networks within and beyond the law enforcement environment.

To achieve these aims, critical analysis and self-reflection techniques will be employed to consider how to lead, manage and influence decisions within an increasingly complex internal and external environments, particularly considering changes in governance, policy, and socio-economic conditions. Additionally, key themes of personal leadership development, performance and risk management, ethical practice, legitimacy, and digital innovation will be evaluated to improve personal effectiveness and practice.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The programme aligns with the academic expectations of the PG-Dip programme 37033.

Assessments on the PG Dip will support the completion of the EPA Portfolio and the Scoping document for the Strategic Business Proposal.

End Point Assessment preparation workshops are run throughout the year to ensure that learners remain on track to complete their academic award and apprenticeship certificate. Learners are also assigned to a Degree Apprentice Facilitator who will meet regularly with the learner, and their employer, to ensure that they are exposed to appropriate opportunities to implement their learning and build their EPA portfolio.

Opportunities for work related learning

Work based and experiential learning are fundamental to an apprenticeship. Apprenticeship learners are required to spend a average of 6 hours/week of their working time on learning activities and as indicated for their intake by the ESFA. In addition, they need to have opportunities to practise and apply what they are learning in the workplace to the benefit of both learner and employer. There are three types of apprenticeship standard that the student needs to evidence – knowledge, skills and behaviour. Knowledge standards can be demonstrated through university assignments, but skills and behaviours are best evidenced in the workplace. The translation of leadership theory into work-based practice is supported by contextualised examples and discussion in class and by the DA Facilitator via the 12 weekly tripartite meetings.
