Educational Aims of the Course

The aim of the programme is to enable the development of comprehensive knowledge, skills and understanding of the management of patients with a cardiac condition.  The students will be supported to develop their understanding with an application to clinical practice in the preventative and presenting management of patients with a cardiac condition.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Critically explore knowledge relating to the impact of common congenital cardiac anomalies on the physical, psychological and social needs of adult patients.
  • Organisation
2.
Critically examine and demonstrate knowledge of the common interventions and subsequent specific care needs of adult patients with a congenital or cardiovascular driven presenting cardiac condition.
  • Communication
3.
Drawing on contemporary evidence critically debate the range of management options available for your patient with a cardiac presentation and justify your therapeutic decisions within the scope of your clinical role.
  • Leadership
  • Collaboration
4.
Analyse complex clinical data in the management of your patient in order to provide best evidence-based care within the scope of your clinical role.
  • Numerical literacy

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The programme will be facilitated through a combination of face to face delivery and online learning. Each module within the programme has learning designed to reflect the requirements of the module.

  • Physiological response to cardiac dysfunction
  • Underlying aetiology of heart failure
  • History of heart failure and prognosis
  • Understanding the physical, social and psychological impact from a patient and families perspective of the heart failure diagnosis
  • Understanding the different approaches to heart failure management based on aetiology and ejection fraction
  • Evidence base heart failure management both pharmacological and non pharmacological
  • Use of heart failure devices, mechanical support and transplantation
  • Promoting self management of heart failure care by empowering patients and families
  • Surgical interventions in the treatment of heart failure.
  • Approaches to follow up continued monitoring and end of life /palliative care

The module will provide an opportunity for the students to experience SIM, tutorials and case study discussions.  The assessment for this module is a written case study.
