Educational Aims of the Course
The aim of the programme is to enable the development of comprehensive knowledge, skills and understanding of the management of patients with a cardiac condition. The students will be supported to develop their understanding with an application to clinical practice in the preventative and presenting management of patients with a cardiac condition.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment
The programme will be facilitated through a combination of face to face delivery and online learning. Each module within the programme has learning designed to reflect the requirements of the module.
70804NAPPG - Heart Failure; An interdisciplinary Approach to Management and Care
The module will cover the following topics:
- Definition and categorisation and diagnosis of heart failure
- Epidemiology of heart failure
- Physiological response to cardiac dysfunction
- Underlying aetiology of heart failure
- History of heart failure and prognosis
- Understanding the physical, social and psychological impact from a patient and families perspective of the heart failure diagnosis
- Understanding the different approaches to heart failure management based on aetiology and ejection fraction
- Evidence base heart failure management both pharmacological and non pharmacological
- Use of heart failure devices, mechanical support and transplantation
- Promoting self management of heart failure care by empowering patients and families
- Surgical interventions in the treatment of heart failure.
- Approaches to follow up continued monitoring and end of life /palliative care
The module will provide an opportunity for the students to experience SIM, tutorials and case study discussions. The assessment for this module is a written case study.
7000ACHD - Adult Congenital Heart Disease
The module syllabus includes:
Developmental anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system - including embryological development of congenital heart defects (CHD) - Pathophysiology and management of different congenital heart conditions - Assessment and therapy strategies to minimise the long-term effects of CHD Healthcare and psycho-social implications - including aspects of the transition from paediatrics to adult care Patient perspective Ethical issues. This module focuses on developing a critical understanding of congenital heart disease in adults, including its origins, presentation, and impact, and addresses specific care requirements. Topics covered include cardiovascular anatomy, pathophysiology, management, long-term effects, healthcare implications, patient perspectives, and ethical issues.
The assessment has one element: Presentation of a case report of 3000 word equivalent.
7105NAPPG - Developing Practice in Cardiac Care/7002CCMA Cardiac Care - Adult
This course will enable participants to develop their knowledge and skills so that they are able to provide high quality care that is based upon sound clinical judgement and robust evidence 1) The evolution of cardiovascular care and the role of evidence 2) Advanced anatomy and physiology of the heart and circulation 3) Physical assessment of the cardiac patient 4) Haemodynamic assessment and intervention 5) Single and 12 lead ECG interpretation 6) Introduction to biochemistry and haematology 7) Cardiac pharmacology and patient concordance 8) Care of the patient post cardiac intervention 9) Managing patients with Acute and chronic heart failure and the use of device therapy 10) Advanced life support 11) Promoting healthy behaviour change through cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention 12) Supporting patients from BAME backgrounds to navigate the healthcare systems 13) Caring for patients who are nearing the end of life and supporting grieving families.
The module assessment is an MCQ examination which must be passed at 80%.
7002CCMA Cardiac care – Adult also has a practice competency element which must be satisfied prior to the release of credit for the module.
