Educational Aims of the Course

To demonstrate a critical  understanding of evidence-based heart failure management in order to provide high quality/gender appropriate and culturally competent care.

To enhance and develop leadership and change management skills that contribute to service redesign and delivery and as a consequence lead to the enhancement of quality of care for patients diagnosed with heart failure.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The face to face learning is delivers through a variety or means, via lectures, seminars, workshops, group work and includes up to 4 hours within the simulated learning environment.  Teaching and learning will be supported by subject experts from cardiology and cardiothoracic backgrounds. Online learning will be underpinned and supported through the VLE with use of Canvas and other tools within LJMU. 

Topics covered within the programme:

  • an introduction to aetiology, anatomy and physiology of heart failure.
  • device management,
  • mechanical support,
  • transplantation,
  • pharmacology and
  • palliative care.

Tutorial support will be provided by the programme/module lead and will support the student to select and develop the case study towards their assessment. 

The assessment will be a 3500 word case study which will be a 100% weighting. 

Opportunities for work related learning

Students on the programme are strongly encouraged to seek out and arrange their own negotiated opportunities for learning within a cardiac clinical setting. They can further enhance this with the use of a reflective journal which formatively compliments their application of learning. 

Programme Structure

Programme Structure Description

The structure of the programme is designed to enhance the students understanding and knowledge of heart failure both from a healthcare professional, patient and carer perspective. The programme runs over 15 weeks and is a combination of face to face and online learning.
