Educational Aims of the Course

The overall aim of the programme is to support students in developing skills relevant to independent prescribing practice in a defined area of practice. The course will provide the skills and knowledge required to ensure safe and effective practice as an independent prescriber. Successful completion of the course will demonstrate the student's competence to allow annotation on the General Pharmaceutical Council or Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland's registers as an independent prescriber.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Demonstrate ability to deliver person-centred care, informed by factors that underpin individualised patient care including equality, diversity, values and beliefs.
2.
Critically reflect on the role and responsibilities of the pharmacist prescriber, and how these support and complement the roles of other members of the multi-disciplinary team
3.
Evaluate influences on the prescribing practitioner in making patient-centred prescribing decisions, taking into account local and national policies and guidelines, legislation, ethical frameworks and patient factors.
4.
Demonstrate the ability to effectively choose, or make recommendations on, appropriate person-centred prescribing decisions, informed by evidence-based medicine and relevant clinical skills and diagnostic tests.
5.
Critically evaluate the risks and benefits associated with prescribing decisions and implement measures to improve the safe use of medicines
6.
Demonstrate ability to practice effectively in collaboration with both healthcare professionals and patients in delivering optimal patient care, both recognising and informed by the professional role of the pharmacist prescriber and their professional limitations

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Lectures, seminars, workshops, work-based activities, and self directed study. Examinations (MCQs and case analysis),case reports, presentations, portfolio. Lectures, seminars, case studies, workplace-based activities, student-directed learning, Teaching Objective Structured Clinical Examination (TOSCE),and portfolio. Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE),oral and written case reports and written reports, portfolio and Designated Medical Practitioner competence assessment. Lectures, seminars, case studies, workplace-based activities, student-directed learning, and Teaching Objective Structured Clinical Examination (TOSCE). Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE),portfolio, and Designated Medical Practitioner competence assessment. Transferable/key skills are embedded in modules within the programme. Examples include the use of computer software to prepare reports and presentations, maintaining an online portfolio, and group working. Case presentations, portfolio and critical reflection.

Opportunities for work related learning

The programme is based in the student's place of work and has extensive opportunities for workbased learning. Students will be supported in their workplace practice by their Designated Prescribing Practitioner and this will be supplemented by work focussed online and self directed learning and coursework activities.
