Educational Aims of the Course

To introduce students to the creative, critical and professional processes involved in making and showing contemporary art. To encourage students to produce art adopting critical approaches that can be developed to a professional standard. To acquire independent Fine Art professional practice, through self-management, evaluation and a developing personal criteria. To develop a theoretical discourse through a broad contextual programme. To encourage students to develop intellectual practice and social contact with peer groups and tutors and to exhibit/show their work. To help develop graduates who will be ready to make meaningful and critical contributions to the world of contemporary art practice. To encourage students to engage with the development of employability skills by completing a self-awareness Statement.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Studio based and/or external based practice/placements supported by Personal Tutor, Individual Tutorials, Group Crits, Seminars and Peer Review. By physical and/or online portfolio and studio based and/or externally based presentation of work. Continual Formative Personal Tutorials with Feedback, Summative/Module Assessment by Group Presentation, Viva, Portfolio Presentation, Exhibition of all work and/or other appropriate means negotiated with Personal Tutor/Staff. All assessments at Levels 3/4/5/6 are linked to assessment criteria and learning outcomes.

Opportunities for work related learning

At Level 4 all students will have the opportunity to develop professional practice and work related learning through 'Introducing Criticality 1' and 'Introducing Criticality 2'. Opportunities for students wishing to complete short and long term work placements will be made available for Level 4 students in this module as and when they arise. All students on Level 4 will have the opportunity to work with an external arts agency as part of a 40 credit Form & Purpose module. At Level 5 all students will have the opportunity to develop professional practice and work related learning through 'Criticality 1' and 'Criticality 2'. These are semester-long 20 credit modules which will integrate PDP and opportunities for students wishing to complete short and long term work placements will be made available for students as and when they arise. All Level 6 students will be offered the opportunity to enhance employability through placement and collaboration opportunities offered to students within the large studio based Fine Art core modules 'Advanced Practice and Experimentation', and 'Advanced Practice and Publication'. Through negotiation with staff, placements at this level can be taken as an alternative means of achieving the module's learning outcomes. At level 6 all modules will emphasise independent learning with professional study and/or the opportunity for students to develop their Fine Art Practice and produce/distribute their work in the public realm to a high professional standard. All Level 6 modules have PDP. All students benefit from the provision of regular School wide self-employment events.
