Educational Aims of the Course

This Negotiated Work Based Learning Certificate of Professional Development is designed to provide students who are Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (SCPHN) with an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to the working environment in relation to widening practice  to a new field of specialist practice. The programme aims to enhance skills, knowledge and critical thinking through negotiated learning objectives and career aspirations. This will be negotiated with their practice assessor and supervisor.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Critically analyse and evaluate current research in relation to the selected area of study.
2.
Critically reflect upon personal and professional development as it relates to the selected area of practice.
3.
Evidence the synthesis of theory and practice as it relates to service and/or practice development.
4.
Demonstrate application and knowledge of NMC (2022) SCPHN proficiencies.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The programme will be delivered through a combination of lectures and tutorials. Students will also have opportunities to engage in enhanced collaborative learning and knowledge exchange with Specialist Community Public Health Nursing students, via the provision of shared learning experiences.

In addition, students will undertake 50 practice days in the chosen area of widening practice.

The programme is assessed via two elements: a practice-based reflective portfolio and a practice-based essay. The portfolio must be passed to complete the full CPD and achieve the widening practice element.

Opportunities for work related learning

The programme consists of 50 practice days in the chosen area of widening practice (for example a school nurse wishing to widen their practice to become a health visitor will negotiate 50 days of health visitor placement with a practice assessor).

The practice portfolio will demonstrate the SCPHN (2022) standards of proficiency. The portfolio provides the underpinning framework for students to demonstrate competence for the duration of the CPD. It structures learning in practice and provides the opportunity to identify practice learning opportunities which will meet the agreed NMC competencies.

The portfolio must be passed to complete the full CPD and achieve the widening practice element.
