Educational Aims of the Course

The overall aim of the programme is to produce postgraduates who are able to play a significant role in the development of public health practice and policy in their current or future place of work . This will be achieved through a stimulating and challenging learning environment which aims to develop key knowledge and skills required to work in an international public health context. The specific aims of the programme are: 1. To enhance knowledge, skills and raise awareness of the public health approach from an international perspective. 2. To provide participants with the knowledge and skills that will strengthen their capacity and capability to engage in partnership work with and for communities to improve health and reduce inequalities in health. 3. To facilitate a learning experience which will enhance their capacity and capability to develop new public health skills and knowledge as well as draw upon their previous experience. 4. To enable students to develop a critical appreciation and understanding of public health systems and the values and evidence which underpin their development. 5. To enhance career development opportunities for students aspiring to work in an international public health context. 6. To provide training in research methods and approaches applicable to their own research and scholarly development.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Online tutorials, inquiry based learning and problem solving activities. Guided reading; VLE activities: discussion boards, online tests and guided video. Email support and self- directed research and study. Critical reviews, essays, reports, presentations, research proposals, reflection, and dissertation.

Opportunities for work related learning

Students are encouraged wherever relevant to apply learning, this includes prior learning and practical experiences.
