Educational Aims of the Course
This course is designed to enable paramedics working in a variety of settings to develop person-centred and reflective approaches to supporting and assessing learning in practice. To apply best evidence to promote the development of self and others in practice.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment
The content of this module is to explore in a Paramedic context:
- The principles of learning, teaching, assessment & accountability.
- Communication methods & working relationships with students / registrants and the inter-professional team.
- Tripartite relationships / learning agreements
- Clinical mentorship/practice education and facilitation of learner support
- Developing the clinical learning environment.
- Competence-based assessment in the practice setting.
- The development of effective roles within urgent and emergency care team.
- The development of positive relationships within urgent and emergency care team.
This module will enable students to explore how to facilitate lifelong learning in others by developing their mentoring, teaching and assessing skills in the urgent and emergency care setting. The assessment will give students the opportunity to reflect on specific aspects of practice education in terms of mentoring, teaching and assessing. The reflections will take account of the students experiences and focus on a reflective cycle leading to further development.
A range of learning methods will be used throughout the programme. Core elements include formal lectures, tutorials and seminars (group and individual) together with action learning sets, portfolio construction and use of a virtual learning environment, using a range of the learning tools within the virtual learning environment forms a key part of the programme.
The module is part-time with a written assessment submission of a portfolio.
The students will have access to a VLE site and the University's other range of electronic support such as access to the electronic library facilities. The module VLE site reflects contemporary reading lists and links to journal articles. The module VLE site also includes a number of presentations for students to access on areas such as critical writing and library support. The students also have access to the module leader through telephone contact, emails and face to face meetings.
A module guide is also provided, which guides students to the wider range of support available.
The methods for improving the quality and standards of learning are as follows:
- Continuous Monitoring and Enhancement (CME).
- Liaison and feedback from the students
- Reports from the External Examiner
- Programme team ensuring the module reflects the values of the current teaching and learning strategy
- Module leader updating knowledge and skills to ensure these remain current and relevant
Finally, this is a standalone CPD. The External Examiner will be the same examiner as the BSc (Hons) Paramedicine.
