Educational Aims of the Course

Support ongoing development as a knowledgeable and skilful paramedic practitioner. Provide opportunities for learners to develop a systematic understanding of knowledge, and a critical awareness of contemporary and emerging issues in paramedic practice. Enable learners to critically analyse and evaluate the evidence base and current developments in paramedic practice. Enable learners to demonstrate initiative, originality, leadership and self-reflection in decision making. Enable learners to practice with a high level of personal and professional responsibility. Enable learners to develop a comprehensive understanding of methodologies applicable to paramedic practice. Enable learners to create new and interpret existing knowledge through practical understanding of research methodologies. Enable learners to address complex professional issues, systematically and creatively, making sound judgements in the presence of incomplete or contradictory areas of knowledge.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Critically examine and apply the evidence base relating to the area of advanced paramedic practice. Draw on a diverse range of knowledge to critically evaluate and justify the rationale for clinical decisions within the context of advanced paramedic practice. Demonstrate the synthesis of theoretical knowledge and understanding in relation to advanced paramedic practice. Critically debate and articulate the concept of advanced paramedic practice. Appropriately define and justify the scope and boundaries of advanced paramedic practice. Demonstrate leadership and communication skills which enable working across professional, organisational and system boundaries. Develop, implement and evaluate strategies and activities that improve practice and health outcomes. Synthesise, critically evaluate and apply research findings to the subject area. Apply the skills of academic study and enquiry to the study of the subject area. Synthesise information from a number of sources to gain an in depth understanding professional practice. Apply strategies for the appropriate selection of relevant information from a wide body of knowledge. Analyse, interpret and evaluate evidence underpinning practice and initiate change appropriately. Reflect critically and constructively on the advanced paramedic professional role. Use problem solving skills to work effectively both individually and as part of a team. Handle information effectively and present this in a succinct and logical manner. Effectively manage self and others. Manage a project with due attention to time and resource management. Use information technologies to support learning, practice and research activities. Demonstrate innovation in the application of knowledge to practice. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Teaching and learning will take place through a combination of face to face lectures, small-group seminars, workshops, and one-to-one tutorials and focuses on theoretical and methodological material along with research methods. Directed and self-directed study will be delivered via the virtual learning platform (VLE) The assessment strategy depending on route taken includes (but is not limited to): Written essays 20,000-word dissertation Practice based competency assessments Written critical reflections OSCE (objective structured clinical examination) Written report Artefact written script Oral presentation Portfolio Poster Presentation

As required within the context of specific modules (Clinical Examination, Clinical Diagnostics), it is recommended that students seek support and guidance from a mentoring perspective and clinical skill acquisition.
