Educational Aims of the Course

  1. Recognise learning need to formulate an action plan for professional development at FHEQ level 6.
  2. Gain knowledge, skills and understanding to meet the specialised needs of service users within all health or social care settings.
  3. Develop skills in problem solving, information retrieval and research for evidence based practice.
  4. Examine a variety of research methods used in health and social care.
  5. Develop and promote the skills of critical, analytical and reflective thinking within evidence and research based practice.
  6. Examine ethical and legal issues in paramedic practice.
  7. Develop specialist knowledge in a relevant area of paramedic practice.

Level 6: BSc (Ordinary) Degree of Higher Education in Out of Hospital Care.

As per 2022/23 Academic Framework Regulations for Undergraduate Programmes: Bachelor’s degree consists of 300 credits: 120 at Level 4, 180 at Levels 5 and 6, of which at least 60 must be at Level 6.

  1. Appreciate the principles of reflective practice, demonstrating the management of self and others.
  2. Demonstrate principles of effective communication theory within professional practice.
  3. Analyse principles of care delivery and the theory underpinning that care.
  4. Analyse relevant aspects of academic disciplines underpinning the sphere of activity within physical, life, social, health and behavioural sciences.
  5. Appraise the evidence base underpinning specific skills and the application of research theory to care delivery.
  6. Assess and critically analyse life-long learning and development.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

A range of learning methods will be used throughout the programme. Core elements include formal lectures, tutorials and seminars (group and individual), action learning sets and portfolio construction using a range of the learning tools within the virtual learning environment to form a key part of the programme. Assessment methods are varied, forming a clear pathway for the student throughout. Assessment methods include; essays, portfolio building, writing a research proposal and the formal dissertation.

Opportunities for work related learning

Although the modules that form this degree do not have a practice element, paramedics will be able to link the theory aspects of the programme to their clinical setting. The modules will inform their own clinical practice and foster a greater understanding of their profession as they apply theory to practice within their own career.

A student that has completed level 6 CPD modules at LJMU, that also match the BSc, can apply for the BSc and have up to a maximum of 90 LJMU level 6 credits recognised through RP(E)L. The process for RPeL arrangements for Level 6 credits were agreed on 28/10/2021. An applicant may have studied equivalent level 6 modules to those offered on the BSc at other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs); for these students we will consider credit transfer into the programme up to a maximum of 20 level 6 credits via RP(E)L. The maximum total of credits (transfer and RP(E)L) on this programme allowed at Level 6 is 90 credits - this is a maximum of 90 credits via LJMU Level 6 credits or a maximum of 20 credits at another HEI or a combination of both e.g. 70 from LJMU and 20 from another HEI. All claims will be considered following the process outlined in the University RPEL policy. Following this, unlike a full-time undergraduate degree, only marks awarded at Level 6 will be taken into account when calculating the final results  classification.

Paediatric clinical examination and minor illness module has a practice competency element (OSCE) which must be satisfied prior to the release of credit for the module. Students who do not pass the competency will be deemed to have failed that attempt at the module
