Educational Aims of the Course
The overall aim of the programme is to produce postgraduates who are able to play a significant role in public health practice. This will be achieved through the building of a sound public health knowledge base and the key skills required to operate as a public health practitioner. The specific aims are to: 1. Provide participants with the knowledge and skills to raise awareness of the population based approach to health and bring an enhanced public health dimension to their work within their current or future employing organisation. 2. Provide a cutting edge curriculum which will enhance knowledge and understanding of key issues and strategic approaches in population health from an international, national and local perspective. 3. Develop/extend students' capacity and capability to engage in partnership work with and for communities to improve health and reduce inequalities in health. 4. Provide participants with a learning experience which will enhance their capacity and capability to develop new skills and knowledge as well as draw upon previous experience. 5. Enhance career development opportunities for both students working within public health and those looking to enter a career in public health.
Learning Outcomes

Utilise key philosophical and theoretical ideas to the approach and practice of public health.

Apply research evidence in the planning and targeting of services and programmes to promote health and/or reduce health inequalities.

Implement qualitative, quantitative and systematic review research methods in the public health field.

Appraise explanations for inequalities in health and their subsequent policy prescriptions.

Critically evaluate the key study designs used in epidemiological studies.

Develop a research question and design a research project which aims to investigate a public health issue.
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Lectures, seminars, tutorials, inquiry based learning and problem solving workshops. Guided reading; Canvas VLE activities: discussion boards, online tests and guided videos. Email support and self -directed research and study. Critical reviews, essays, presentations, research protocols, reports, and dissertation.

MSc Public Health is the target awards. The PG Cert and PG Dip Public Health are recruitable targets or can be offered as an alternative exit award. The MSc Public Health can be studied full time.

To qualify for the award of PG Dip Public Health (120 credits),students must complete the following Core Modules: 7000PUBHEA, 7019PUBHEA, 7002PUBHEA, 7007PUBHEA, and a further 40 option credits.
To qualify for the award of MSc Public Health students must complete the following Core Modules: 7000PUBHEA, 7019PUBHEA, 7002PUBHEA, 7003PUBHEA, 7007PUBHEA, and a further 40 option credits.
Option modules include: 7010PUBHEA, 7011PUBHEA, 7023PUBHEA, 7024PUBHEA, 7021PUBHEA and 7012PUBHEA.
