Educational Aims of the Course
The overall aim of the programme is to produce postgraduates who are able to play a significant role in the development of public health practice and implementation of policy in their current or future place of work . This will be achieved through a stimulating and challenging learning environment which aims to develop key knowledge and skills required to work in an international public health context. The specific aims of the programme are to: 1. Enhance knowledge, skills and raise awareness of the public health approach from an international perspective. 2. Provide participants with the knowledge and skills that will strengthen their capability to engage in partnership work with and for communities to improve health and reduce inequalities in health. 3. Facilitate a learning experience which will enhance their capacity to develop new public health skills and knowledge as well as draw upon their previous experience. 4. Enable students to develop a critical appreciation and understanding of health systems and the values and evidence which underpin their development. 5. Enhance career development opportunities for students aspiring to work in an international public health context. 6. Provide training in research methods and approaches applicable to their own research and scholarly development.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Assess the evidence base and the effectiveness of interventions, programmes and services to improve population health and wellbeing from a global perspective and more specifically in low resource settings.
2.
Critically appraise published research and other public health and health service related reports and documents.
3.
Apply research evidence in the planning and targeting of services and programmes to promote health and/or reduce health inequalities.
4.
Shape and influence policies to improve health and reduce inequalities at the local level.
5.
Apply critical thinking, ethical and analytical skills.
6.
Apply research findings to the development or improvement of programmes and services.
7.
Assess potential population based health risks.
8.
Monitor and critically evaluate population health status based on a thorough understanding of epidemiological principles and systematic health surveillance.
9.
Develop a research question and design a research project which aims to investigate a public health issue.

Use basic but appropriate statistical tools of analysis and packages e.g. SPSS

Analyse qualitative data.

Critically analyse the relationship between the social determinants of health and inequalities in health from a global perspective.

Apply key philosophical and theoretical ideas which underpin the approach and practice of public health.

Appraise the key study designs used in epidemiological studies.
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Lectures, seminars, tutorials, inquiry based learning and problem solving workshops. Guided reading; VLE Canvas based activities: discussion boards, online tests and guided video. To qualify for the exit award of PG Cert International Public Health (60) credits students must have completed the following core modules: 7000PUBHEA, 7020PUBHEA plus 20 other core or option credits on the programme.
To qualify for the exit award of PG Dip International Public Health (120) credits students must have completed the following core modules: 7000PUBHEA, 7019PUBHEA, 7002PUBHEA, 7004PUBHEA, 7020PUBHEA plus 30 option credits.
