Educational Aims of the Course
The overall aim of the programme is to produce postgraduates who are able to play a significant role in the development and implementation of policies, strategies and interventions in the field of Addiction. This will be achieved through the building of a sound knowledge base in both public health and addictions; and the key skills required to operate as a public health practitioner in this field. The specific aims are to: 1. Provide participants with the knowledge and skills to raise awareness of the population approach to health and bring an enhanced public health dimension to their work within their current or future employing organisation. 2. Provide a cutting edge curriculum which will enhance knowledge and understanding of key ideas and concerns in public health and addiction from an international, national and local perspective. 3. Develop/extend students capacity and capability to engage in partnership work with and for communities to improve health and reduce inequalities in health related to addiction. 4. Provide participants with a learning experience which will enhance their capacity and capability to develop new skills and knowledge as well as draw upon previous experience. 5. Prepare practitioners in public health related addictions to respond to and manage change in the workplace. 6. Provide opportunities for participants to develop leadership skills and methods of collaborative working. 7. Enhance career development opportunities for both students working within the field of addictions and those looking to enter a career in it.
Learning Outcomes

Apply knowledge of the social determinants of health and the evidence base for this to addiction.

Shape and influence interventions and policies to improve health outcomes and reduce inequalities related to addictions.

Apply critical thinking, ethical and analytical skills in learning and work place environments.

Deal with complex issues related to addiction and health both systematically and creatively.

Develop a research question and design a research project which aims to investigate a public health issue related to addiction.

Apply research findings to the development and improvement of public health/addictions services and programmes.

Assess and advise others on population health risks related to addiction.

Use basic but appropriate statistical tools of analysis and packages e.g. SPSS

Apply communication and advocacy skills related to addiction work and practice.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Lectures, seminars, tutorials, inquiry based learning and problem solving workshops. Guided reading; VLE Canvas activities: discussion boards, online tests and guided video. Email support and self -directed research and study. Critical reviews, essays, presentations, research protocols, reports, and dissertation.
