Aims
The module allows students to:
Conduct their research project in the area of policing and/or criminal justice.
Analyse and interpret data generated by their research project.
Make an original contribution to knowledge in the area of policing and/or criminal justice via the implementation of the research project.
Provide recommendations for practice/policy from their research project.
Develop skills in producing convincing arguments to defend their research thesis.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate the creation and interpretation of new knowledge of a quality to satisfy peer review, extend the forefront of policing studies and/or criminal justice studies, and merit publication
2.
Demonstrate the qualities and transferable skills ability to exercise personal responsibility, show autonomous evidence-based decision-making and be adaptable in unpredictable and complex situations.
3.
Recognise and describe problems relevant to an area of policing and/or criminal justice, situate knowledge within an international context, and propose innovative solutions with the potential to create new knowledge.
4.
Display a systematic acquisition, understanding, and critical evaluation of a diverse body of knowledge (including international and non-academic) which is at the forefront of policing studies and/or criminal justice or their area of related professional practice.
5.
Make informed and realistic judgements on complex issues within an area of policing and/or criminal justice.
6.
Implement a project for the generation of new knowledge, applications or understanding at the forefront of policing/criminal justice or area of relevant professional practice, and to adjust the project design in the light of unforeseen problems.

Apply and develop appropriate techniques/methods in research and scholarship

Provide implications for the further development of their specific professional practice in relation to their own work, its context, and the form future development would take, including how to measure the impact of innovative solutions and how to engage with stakeholders and users of research to extend influence and impact of research within and beyond academia.

Present final thesis clearly and concisely at a level that aligns to the Institution's Professional Doctoral regulations

Workshops: These will centre around providing bespoke inputs to assist students with specific tasks, including:

- How to structure a thesis
- How to disseminate findings and communicate work to specialist and non-specialist
audiences - How to make recommendations and how to measure the impact of these recommendations.
Workshops: These will centre around providing bespoke inputs to assist students with specific tasks, including:
- Further input in terms of collecting and analysing data
- How to prepare for a viva
Module Overview:
This module will allow students to carry out their doctoral research project and will support them with this process, such as providing support in terms of the structure of the thesis, how to analyse and interpret the impact of their recommendations. Student will also be given guidance on how to prepare for their viva and will have the opportunity to practice this in an assessed 'mock' viva.
