Aims

To critically evaluate the application of methods to educational research and apply the principles of effective research design to an area of professional interest in education practice which shows an awareness of the interconnections between difference research approaches and their implications for the production of knowledge with some understanding of epistemology/ontology.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Critically appraise methods and methodologies relevant to educational research design.
2.
Critically select methods suited to the investigation of a research problem in education.
3.
Identify main philosophical and methodological positions in relation to a specific research problem.
4.
Evaluate strategies for the management and analysis of data.
5.
Critically analyse and manage the ethical implications of research as an education professional.
6.
Formulate a feasible research question(s) and study design based on a defined area for exploration which demonstrates a clear sense of issues relevant to the study.

Additional Information:
This module is designed to deepen and extend the student's knowledge about research in and on education by providing them with the knowledge and understanding necessary to evaluate a range of approaches to educational research.  The module offers students space to engage in detailed consideration of their professional context and the educational problems, issues and questions that arise from it.  The anticipated outcome is a workable research design through a process of conceptualising research questions then identifying the best means to answer those questions.  Students will review data collection issues, research ethics and operational management of research.  The process is designed to support students' transition into the thesis phase of the programme.
