2.
Critically and creatively evaluate contemporary issues, research and scholarship in an appropriate area of health practice
3.
Synthesise relevant theoretical perspectives, research and evidence based findings and professional practice
4.
Apply appropriate research and scholarly techniques to a key issue in health practice in an ethically sound manner
5.
Present and defend research/evidence outcomes that extend the knowledge in a relevant area of professional practice

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The thesis will be based on an area of relevance to the students professional practice. This can be achieved through original research/ service evaluation or a quality improvement study. It will represent a significant contribution to knowledge in the students field of practice. The majority of the work on the thesis will be carried out during the thesis period, but it is anticipated that this will be developed and informed by the research proposal (8002DPHH) and the literature review (8002DPHH).
Module Overview:
The thesis offers the student an opportunity to explore an area of interest associated with their professional practice. This will develop from their study proposal submitted within Stage one of the programme. The depth and breadth of this work will be commensurate with that expected at doctoral level. Students will be supervised throughout the process.

The following domains of The NHS England's (2024) 'Multi-professional practice-based research capabilities framework' will be achieved through the completion of the thesis stage:
  • Domain 3: Delivering research
  • Domain 5: Networking and collaborating
  • Domain 7: Leading and managing research projects and teams

Additional Information:
The thesis module represents stage 2 of the DPPH programme. This stage is an independent stage of the DPPH programme. The students will be supported via one-to-one supervision. A supervision team of up to four supervisors will appointed to each student. The supervision team will meet on a regular basis with the student. It is recommended that supervision should be at least 10 sessions per year. A record of supervision and progress will be made via eDoc.

Additional support will be provided through 'Professional Peer Learning set's (PPLS) these will be created by the programme but we be student led. There will also be regular academic touch points which include tutorials, a book/journal club and writing workshops.

Masterclasses for the thesis module will include include an analysis workshop, several writing workshops, how to create and work with a 'long' document, writing for publication and methods of dissemination.

The programme team will host a 'Professional Doctorate symposium' to showcase the student studies- all supervisors and the wider school will be invited. This Symposium will provide opportunities for networking, collaborating and dissemination. This reflects the NHS England's (2024) 'Multi-professional practice-based research capabilities framework' Domain 5.

Capabilities in this domain centre on realising the benefits of learning with and from others in research. They involve bringing together stakeholders, differing perspectives and expertise to enhance the quality, capability and capacity of research.

Please Note:

The programme team advise that one credit equates to ten notional hours of learning- this is the estimated time commitment expected from students undertaking this module.
