Aims

Deconstruct the notion of methodology in educational research.

Critically analyse a range of methods suited to the investigation of research problems in education.

Critically explore the relationship between research and the development of educational theory, practice and policy.

Outline Syllabus:Conceptualising education and educational research.
The place of research knowledge in learning, teaching and assessment practices.
Methodological considerations in educational research.
Key research methods and approaches: qualitative methods, quantitative methods and mixing methods.
Methods in context.
Literature reviews.
Documentary analysis.
Data analysis - skills and theory.
Module Overview:
This module is designed to deepen and extend your knowledge about both research in, and on, education. It will also equip you to become a 'critical consumer' of research as a practitioner, by supporting you to develop the knowledge and understanding necessary to evaluate a range of approaches to educational research.

Additional Information:This module is designed to deepen and extend the student's knowledge about research in and on education. It will equip students to become ‘critical consumers’ of research as practitioners, by providing them with the knowledge and understanding necessary to evaluate a range of approaches to educational research. Assessment is through the production of an article of publishable quality. Formative assessment will be offered in the form of a review of an initial version, to some extent mimicking the conventions of peer review.
