Aims

To develop a critical understanding of the historical and socio-cultural frameworks and perceptions of mental health and illness.

Learning Outcomes

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Ancient perceptions of mental illness. The Enlightenment and the birth of the Asylums. Societal changes and mental health (gin, syphilis and social media). Key Figures in the development of Psychiatry (Freud, Jung, Pinel and Sacks). Shell shock and military psychiatry. Laing, Szasz and the anti-psychiatry movement. Mental health and coercion (the utilisation of psychiatry within social control and restrictive practice). The social construction of other (mental health and stigma, from witchcraft to personality disorder). The portrayal of mental illness in early art and literature. Mental health and the media (exploring contemporary pictures of psychiatry). The philosophy of mental illness (Foucault, Bentham and the understanding of mental ill health). Film and mental health (from Fritz Lang to Donnie Darko).
Module Overview:
This 30 credit module aims to develop a critical understanding of the historical and socio-cultural framework and perceptions of mental health illness. It is assessed via a poster presentation supported by a written critical analysis. The focus of the module is on the portrayal of mental illness through a variety of mediums. This includes the exploration of society's relationship with mental illness across time, the portrayal of mental illness through art, film, and media and the philosophical development of psychiatry and mental illness.
Additional Information:
This module is a core module which forms part of the MA Mental Health and an option choice module on the MA Nursing: Mental Health. It is not a stand alone CPD module.
