Aims
This module will enable participants to focus on the skills a young person with multi-sensory impairment may need to develop in terms of mobility and orientation as well as independence skills.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the range and population of deafblind learners and evaluate the impact of a multi-sensory impairment on independence and autonomy.
2.
Critically evaluate areas that impact on the assessment of deafblind learners, including individual needs, environment, technology, mobility, and independent living skills.
3.
Critically reflect on professional practices in educational multi-sensory impairment settings, informed by contemporary policy, research, and debates on deafblindness.

- knowledge of the importance of the environment and how to assess, modify and adapt it for those with MSI to optimise learning and development;
- the impact of an individuals MSI and the environment will then be explored in terms of orientation, mobility and independence skills, focusing on the challenges that may be faced and strategies to mitigate these and still ensure children with MSI have high expectations and are stretched to achieve their optimum.
