Aims

This module will enable participants to have an understanding of the distinct, unique causes and implications of deafblindness, their role as a specialist teacher in this field and the wider context including policy and practice across the UK.  

Learning Outcomes

1.
Demonstrate an understanding of the range and population of deafblind learners and evaluate the impact of an multi-sensory impairment on development (access to information, communication and mobility)
2.
Critically analyse and evaluate issues of resource allocation and quality assurance of provision for multi-sensory impaired learners.
3.
Review and critically appraise legislation and national and local policies, procedures, and guidelines, including statutory assessment processes, relating to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities and, in particular, those with multi-sensory impairment.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
This module explores:
  • the unique disability that is deafblindness;
  • the social and emotional implications and impact on relationships for those with multi-sensory impairment, with a particular focus on self-advocacy and ensuring the learner voice is a part of the planning and work moving forward;
  • secondary transition through development of knowledge and understanding of the issues of transition to adulthood and the planning required from practical aspects such as exams and options for further study etc. 
Module Overview:
This module continues to examine the unique disability that is deafblindness from developing knowledge and understanding the impact of a multi-sensory impairment on all aspects of life. 
Additional Information:
This module mapped against the requirements for the Department for Education's (DfE) specification for specialist teachers of pupils with multi-sensory impairment / deafblindness, alongside the other modules in this programme.
