Aims
This module will develop an understanding of how communication and language develops in deafblind learners and the range of modes of communication used by multi-sensory impaired learners to participate in their lives and the world round them.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Critically evaluate the effect of multi-sensory impairment on a learners' ability to communicate and access the world around them, including the curriculum and environment.
2.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the environmental factors that affect multi-sensory impaired learners' ability to communicate and access the world around them.
3.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the multi-modal approach to communication with multi-sensory impaired learners, including the use of specific strategies such as hand under hand signing, haptics and bodily emotional traces.

This module explores:
- the stages of development of communication in neurotypical children and then compares and contrasts this to those with MSI and the challenges that they may face;
- theory and experience of exploring modes of communication from Modified communication through AAC to tactile which will all be covered;
- how to assess a child with MSI’s communication levels and plan appropriate interventions, considering the importance of organic communication and co-creating communication with young people.

This module will develop an understanding, knowledge and practical application of how to assess a child with MSI communication abilities. How to plan to support and develop their communication. Taking into consideration their sensory impairment, conceptual understanding to positively impact access to education, relationships etc.
