Aims
The aim of this module is to introduce the main theories and methodologies regarding practice as research, self-assessment, and reflective analysis. The module will also initiate a process of professional career development planning.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Apply methods of investigation, identify personal/individual professional skills, and develop approaches to practise as research.
2.
Systematically examine and evaluate approaches to professional development, concepts of learning by doing within the creative industries whilst critically evaluating relationships, structures, and frameworks within a professional work environment.
3.
Analyse applicable music and creative industry management occupations, identify and describe abilities that contribute to professional management expertise.
4.
Reflect on and evaluate factors which impact upon the achievement of professional goals and apply conclusions to personal career planning and development.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
Through the method of reflective practice as a research methodology, the module will focus on academic skills such as:
(1) accessing library resources
(2) critically evaluating academic literature
(3) developing feedback literacy
(4) reflective writing skills
(5) understanding the wider field of music research beyond their discipline.
The module will consider a range of professional environments and industry focused frameworks in order to analyse the global music economy and the role of creative, technical, economic, and technological processes within that economy. It will examine ways in which work orientated research can engender and reveal professional practise, creative thinking, and operational dynamics. The module will also consider various methods and paradigms for carrying out work-based research. Notions of personal development in the context of practical investigation and the demands of the industry will also be considered.

You analyse your own professional work and discover how to use that work as research to develop your professional journey. You are invited to self-reflect in a critically rigorous manner and apply the conclusions to career planning and development. Through lectures, seminars, and group discussions, you develop your essential learning, academic and writing skills, while cultivating essential critical thinking skills. You become familiar with appropriate research methodologies and understand the importance and procedures of ethical conduct of research projects in preparation for designing your own research projects and MA dissertation.
