Aims

This module aims to give you the opportunity to produce a lengthy piece of work ( 15000-20000 words *) on a topic of your choice. * Footnotes, bibliography and appendices are included in the word count;

The dissertation will enhance your abilities in the realms of collection, analysis and interpretation of primary material, and the development of critical response in the use of secondary sources;

The purpose of this PGT dissertation is to demonstrate that you can identify an issue or problem, research, assemble and analyse the available evidence, present convincing and coherent arguments on the basis of that evidence, and locate the results within the broader context of modern scholarship.

The dissertation should be based at least in part on primary data or sources, and the choice of topic must take into account the accessibility of such materials.

Outline Syllabus:
A member of the academic staff will act as your supervisor for the dissertation. Your supervisor is responsible for giving advice on reading, structure and presentation of dissertations. Your supervisor will help to ensure that the dissertation project develops satisfactorily and will provide expert guidance in the relevant subject area.

Semesters one and two: You should devise a research topic in collaboration with your intended supervisor. The topic should draw on an area of expertise of the supervisor. The topic should also be agreed with the Subject Leads. The taught component of the MA and MSc programme during Semester one and two delivers modules that are designed to enhance your research skills and, where possible, will be tailored toward your research.

By week three of semester one, you, in consultation with the Master's Subject Leads, will have been appointed a supervisor. You are expected to ensure that the supervisor is kept up-to-date with the progress of the dissertation. You will be expected to see your supervisor at least four times during each semester. It is your responsibility to meet with her/him regularly in order to discuss progress.

June- 15 September: It is expected that you use the summer to work on the completion of your research. While the supervisors will try to ensure that they are available to provide feedback (possibly through email) on a regular basis, it is your responsibility to carefully plan your work and not expect extra advising in the month prior to submission . You will be expected to show initiative and independence during the course of your research. You are expected to ensure that the supervisor is kept up-to-date with the progress of the dissertation. You are entitled to a minimum of five hours of supervision for your MA/MSc dissertation that is independent of the supervision that you receive in taught skills modules. Around 2.5 of these should relate to the direction of the dissertation, and the other 2.5 should be feedback on work. While supervisors will try to ensure that they are available for face-to-face contact at some point during the summer (between the end of semester two and the date of submission), it is understood that supervision can take the form of email feedback on work. You should note that you are responsible for organising this with your dissertation supervisor. You should also be aware that you cannot make unreasonable demands on staff time and that supervision will be spread out over the whole summer period. It is your responsibility to contact your supervisor and ensure he/she is aware of your progress and of any problems. Your supervisor will be able to comment on a minimum of one chapter, on one occasion, of the student’s draft dissertation. You should find someone other than a staff member, perhaps a fellow graduate student or friend/family member, to proof-read your work and check your English (particularly if you are not a native English speaker).
Module Overview:
The dissertation allows you to undertake independent guided research on a scholarly topic of relevance in the discipline of your choice.
