Aims
To instil students with an understanding and appreciation of heritage sites and buildings and means to safeguard their conservation and sustainable future through interpretive architectural interventions and / or the exploration of proposals for adaptive reuse.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Integrate knowledge of cultural and intellectual histories, theories and technologies that influence a topic relevant to the modification and transformation of existing historical sites, buildings and structures.
2.
Appraise client, user and environmental and culturally contextual criteria in the preparation of a brief positing a design approach.
3.
Create a design project that creatively modifies a historic site or building and present the proposals using a range of media in two and three dimensions clearly identifying and retained, modified and new parts of the building.
4.
Creatively apply art, cultural, environmental or other work to an adaptation project, in terms of its spatial resolution and representation.
5.
Critically analyse precedents with regard to function, organisation and technical strategies.
6.
Synthesise constructional, structural, environmental and regulatory requirements and strategies with a design project that explores the creative adaptation of an existing historic site or building.
7.
Articulate clearly through writing, drawings and diagrams the evaluation of design proposals and their technical resolution.

Outline Syllabus:
This module will engage students in the process of interpreting ant thematically developing a brief and investigating through three dimensional studies the notion of changing social and cultural activities through the modification of the built form of a historic site or collection of buildings.

This module will introduce students to the importance of researching, understanding and interpreting social and cultural ideas. Studies of relevant history and theories, technology and materials will underpin the module. Presentation of designs will take the form of models, drawings and other creative media, and will be presented in exhibition and portfolio format. Additional information will be provided in Module Guide and module component briefing documents.
