Aims

The module aims to participants’ depth of knowledge and understanding of vision and visual processing, as well as the possible effects of ocular and cerebral visual dysfunction for learning and development.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate critical understanding of the range and population of VI learners and evaluate the impact of a visual impairment on development.
2.
Demonstrate critical understanding of key concepts in relation to the formal clinical assessment and functional visual assessment
3.
Critically review methods of assessment of functional vision and touch, and evaluate the implications for teaching and learning and environmental adaptation
4.
Critically evaluate assessment areas such as mobility, access technology and use of low vision aids

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The eye, brain and vision. How sight develops, the range and causes of sight loss, how vision impairments are identified Ocular and cerebral of vision impairment, their educational implications of the pathology and treatment of eye conditions The theory and application of current ophthalmic practice and protocols Commonly used clinical and functional procedures for assessing how learners with VI process visual information How low vision devices make effective use of functional vision The impact of vision impairment on the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of VI learners and on their families The relationship between vision impairment and the development of communication skills and on the cognitive, emotional and social development of learners with VI and ways to minimise these
Module Overview:
The Visually Impaired Learner module will develop knowledge and understanding of vision and visual processing, as well as the possible effects of ocular and cerebral dysfunction for learning and development.
Additional Information:This module is part of the PG Diploma in Education delivered in collaboration with St Vincent’s School. This module examines issues involved in assessment, as well as in interpreting assessment information, within both clinical as well as functional settings. This includes knowledge and understanding of the use of a range of approaches for information gathering, including observation techniques and related forms of assessment. Students will be expected to develop knowledge and understanding of the application of different approaches to the assessment and enhancement of visual function, including the provision of Low Vision Aids (LVAs).
