Aims

This module will introduce students to contemporary areas of psychology including ethics, health, work, forensic and positive psychology and equip them with selected academic skills necessary for successful engagement with the Psychology MSc programme. There will be a focus on thinking critically about key issues in psychology including e.g. ethics in a digital age, understanding the practice and application of psychological research and comparing and contrasting different theoretical perspectives on health, work, forensic and positive psychology. Students will reflect on their current skills and determine areas where development is required.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Critical discussion of concepts, measures and classical studies in health, work, digital, forensic and positive psychology. Discussion of different theoretical perspectives on these themes. Workshops on skills audit, presentation skills, and postgraduate academic writing. The emphasis throughout will be on interaction, encouraging students to explore the material for themselves and develop their own critical thinking, communication, and study skills.
Additional Information:Initial weeks will focus on students evaluating their current skills and abilities for postgraduate study in psychology and identifying areas for development. Each major topic will consider the essential core concepts and a selection of classical psychological studies on the topic. Topics will be briefly considered from different theoretical perspectives. During online study students will critically discuss scientific research in written form.
