Aims
This module aims to develop critical thinking skills around topics which are essential to the practice of a professional Engineer. These include Ethics, Risk, Security and the importance of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. The module is framed in terms of personal and professional development and requires participants to develop plans for their future learning.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Critically evaluate the responsibilities that professional engineers have for the identification, mitigation and management of risk.
2.
Demonstrate a clear understanding of different types of security, vulnerabilities and the responsibility that professional engineers have to identify, mitigate and manage both physical and cyber security.
3.
Critically evaluate the ethical principles which engineers must adhere to when they practice.
4.
Recognise the engineer's duty to take an inclusive approach to engineering practice and recognise the responsibilities, benefits and importance of supporting equality, diversity and inclusion.
5.
Critically evaluate their own professional development and demonstrate an ability to reflect on their own development requirements.

Professional Ethics: - Honesty and Integrity - Respect for life, law, the environment and public good - Accuracy and rigour - Leadership and communication Risk: - Identification and assessment of hazards and risk. - Managing and reviewing risks. - Legislation and codes. - Communication and dissemination. Security: - Types of security (physical, cyber, information) - Identifying vulnerabilities - Mitigating vulnerabilities - Legislation and codes of practice - Personal and professional responsibilities. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI): - The importance and benefits of EDI in professional environments and professional practice. - Legal duties - Accessibility Continuing Professional Development (CPD): - The importance of CPD and lifelong learning for Engineers. - Assessing development requirements. - Recording CPD for professional bodies.
