Aims
AS1 - to undertake an extensive piece of applied research with guidance from a selected tutor on a topic either directly or indirectly related to the subject of Architecture. To develop a programme of research and activity using both primary and secondary material - whilst referencing sourcing appropriate information from many and varied sources. To prepare sufficient material to allow a tutor and a Study Panel to understand the focus and intent of the study - with reference to research methods and outcomes. To undertake the writing of the 'Specialist Study' which involves the preparation and development of the final assessed piece of the work. This is usually submitted to Canvas but may also be in an illustrated, written and bound hard copy.
AS2 – to understand the functional, technical, environmental and cultural context of the proposed thesis project. To set the proposed brief within the wider urban context and understand the ramifications of a proposed development upon its surroundings. To analyse and critically synthesise lessons from previous examples of responses to similar design problems to create a comprehensive briefing document for the thesis project.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Investigate an architectural subject using a mix of sources (both primary and secondary) in order to develop an intelligent and correctly constructed dissertation
2.
Undertake a substantial piece of referenced specialist research (using standard conventions) critically exploring an agreed hypothesis and analysing the outcomes of that research.
3.
Clearly articulate and evidence an understanding of the functional and organisational basis of the brief for their thesis proposal.
4.
Explain, analyse and evaluate through the use of appropriate design precedents an understanding of the nature of previous solutions to similar problems.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:This module will take place in the First Semester and will give the student the opportunity to work independently on a research area of their choice. It will develop skills which will be useful in career development and progression. The initial subject and tutor selection will take place in Semester Two of MArch year 1 and this will be developed in Module 7111MAS. This will give students sufficient time to establish initial plans of research and consider their topic in the wider context. The topic selection will be tutor led but students will have the opportunity to select a topic of their own choice under negotiation. The writing process will be guided by a series of seminars and normally the outcome will be an academic dissertation.
Module Overview:
This module provides the opportunity for you to produce a substantial piece of written work based upon extensive research of your chosen subject area as defined in 7111MAS. It is the chance for you to develop ideas and explore in detail an area of the subject of Architecture which lies beyond the immediacy of the design process.
