Aims

1) To provide students with the research tools and skills necessary to undertake and engage successfully in independent legal research study at M level 2) To enable students to present legal issues, disputes and attendant intellectual argument in a structured and comprehensible manner sufficient to embark upon preparation for a M level dissertation.

Demonstrate skills associated with problem-solving and decision making based on own research and analysis demonstrated through legal writing and communication skills.

Demonstrate the capacity to work independently and to professional standards and display high order skills in legal research and writing.

Apply critical and analytical skills associated with legal analysis to identified scenario and situations.

Research effectively through a selection of appropriate theories, methodologies and techniques using primary and secondary materials

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:1. Introduction to studying and researching at Masters level 2. Selection of research questions by negotiation with a supervisor 3. Identifying and locating legal sources 4. Legal research methodologies: Doctrinal, socio-legal and comparative. 5. Learning about Research Ethics 6. Developing a research plan 7. Constructing a dissertation proposal 8. Writing a Dissertation proposal/Chapter sample
