Aims
The aim of this module is for SPQ students to work in partnership with key professionals to produce a publishable piece of work on a topic of their choice which supports future SPQ practice.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Identify and justify topics relevant for publication and justify journal selection.
2.
Develop an independent perspective on the topic and demonstrate critical engagement with the target audience.
3.
Construct and defend the paper in line with journal guidelines for publication.
4.
Demonstrate evidence of dissemination of the area of study to peers locally, regionally or nationally within the context of specialist community practice.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
1. Types of publication: journal articles; research papers, case studies, discussion papers, editorials, book reviews, letters; books, authored and edited, chapters in books; reports, proposals and policy documents.
2. Levels of journals; research journals and impact factors; professional journals.
3. Writing for target audiences: techniques, tips, complexities, challenges; critical evaluation of contemporary articles in the field.
4. The journeys of a journal paper/textbook; following guidelines for journal publication; academic writing; publication terminology (e.g. proofs, copy editor); structuring an article; undertaking amendments.
5. Using feedback constructively; critical reading of own writing; learning to refute, defend and accept critical commentary.
6. Legal and ethical issues of publishing: copyright; authorship order/inclusion criteria.
