Aims

1) To provide research methods and theory underpinnings 2) To teach students to develop higher level skills of extended legal research, analysis, the selection of legal sources and the management of their study. 3) To give students the opportunity to plan and carry out an in depth study of their chosen legal topic. 4)To allow students to take responsibility for their own learning.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Critically evaluate, analyse and assess the nature of the legal framework, structure and regulation impacting their chosen area of legal study.
2.
Show originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry may be used to create and interpret knowledge in their chosen area of law.
3.
Demonstrate conceptual understanding and evidence of critical evaluation, current research and advanced scholarship in their chosen area of law.
4.
Critically evaluate arguments, assumptions and abstract concepts and so formulate judgments and identify a range of solutions to a given problem.
5.
Manage time and develop independent learning for continuous development.

Outline Syllabus:1. Identifying and locating legal sources 2. Legal research methodologies: Doctrinal, socio-legal and comparative. 3. Learning about Research Ethics 4. Developing a research plan and carrying it out 5. Writing a Dissertation

This module aims to:
