Aims

1.To review the global nature of international labour regimes and the regulatory mechanisms 2.To understand the link between international labour law; corporate governance and international trade 3.To describe each of the rights encompassed by the term international labour and to consider the main legal elements pertinent to each right 4.To review the operation of international labour regimes through specific industries, e.g. agriculture, fishing, hazardous industries…etc. 5.To place this study within the broader setting of economic policy and commercial application 6. To consider the importance of the law, policies and strategies regarding equality

Learning Outcomes

Critically engage with relevant contemporary legal issues.

Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of the contemporary issues pertaining to the core and option areas of study

Have a systematic understanding of current problems and contemporary issues and/or insights into the changing nature of UK and international organisations operating within a multi national framework.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:1.Introduction to the International Labour Organisation. Learn about the origin, structure and aims of the International Labour Organisation. Understand the importance of the International Labour Standards. 2.Adopt and apply a holistic approach to labour law. Learn about labour law and practice on the national, European and international dimensions. Examine how national and international labour laws are responding to the challenges of globalisation as it re-shapes the workplace 3.Understand and develop a critical appreciation of equality laws, with particular reference to gender equality; workplace discrimination; maternity protection and indigenous and tribal peoples. 4.Develop an awareness of child labour, particularly in agriculture, fishing and hazardous industries. Understand the scale of the problem, suggested policies and measures to eradicate this problem. Understand the link between corporate social responsibility and child labour. 5.Describe youth unemployment on a global scale. Appreciate the impact of unemployment on young people; global employment trends for youth; minimum wage and vocational training. 6.Evaluate the freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining; the exercise of such rights has a major impact on work and living conditions, as well as on the development and progress of economic and social systems. 7.Exhibit a good understanding of health and safety at work. Compare health and safety conditions across industries, countries and appreciate that women, children and migrants are most vulnerable.
