Aims

  • Equip post-graduate students with the necessary measurement skills for assessing muscle strength and power in Sports and Clinical settings
  • Develop an understanding of the contribution to muscle performance of the biomechanical characteristics of muscles tendons and joints
  • Develop practical skills for assessing the above biomechanical characteristics
  • Prepare students to transition from their academic studies to successful and effective practitioners in Sports and Clinical Biomechanics settings.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Apply, analyse, evaluate and adapt methods used for the assessment of muscle performance and musculoskeletal system function in practice, research and development
2.
Critically appraise current literature on muscle performance and underpinning mechanisms at muscle-tendon-joint level and adaptations
3.
Apply current strategies and methods for improving muscle performance in sports and rehabilitation applications.
4.
Research, evaluate and summarise information related to muscle performance and adaptations in muscle-tendon-joint structure and function

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Functional importance & theoretical foundations of muscle strength and power assessment; Measurement of whole-body muscle strength & power; Measurement of single-joint muscle strength & power; Muscle sarcomere & fibre architecture & adaptations to altered mechanical loading; Ultrasound scanning & analysis of muscle structure; Levers; Muscle activation/co-activation/EMG, & EMG-moment relationship; Tendons and tendon mechanical property assessment; Musculoskeletal Modelling.
Module Overview:
This module will equip students with 1) the necessary measurement skills to evaluate muscle performance in Sports and Clinical settings, 2) knowledge on the role of biomechanical factors at muscle-tendon-joint level for the expression of muscle performance, 3) skills to evaluate these biomechanical factors and the adaptation they undergo in response to altered mechanical loading in Sports and clinical settings. By doing so, the module will Prepare students to transition from their academic studies to successful and effective practitioners.
Additional Information:
Cutting edge equipment in our Biomechanics labs will be used for obtaining the skills to measure muscle performance and study the mechanical behaviour of human muscle-tendons in-vivo. This includes:- Whole body kinetic and kinematic measurements systems, Isokinetic dynamometers, ultrasound scanners for visualizing human muscles and tendons in-vivo.
