Aims

Cognition, or thinking, is recognized as being a key component underlying the way people think and behave. As such, the overall aim and distinctive quality of the module is to critically explore why offenders commit acts of sexual and physical violence. This course will examine influential theories that have been developed to aid in investigating sexual/ violent offenses. Further, this module aims to explore the investigative niche area of serial offending and why offenders chose certain victims. Aims: 1. To introduce students to a core of foundational concepts in respect to sexual and violent offences. 2. To encourage students to reflect upon, explain, analyse and evaluate critical evidence beyond a basic first responder response to investigate sexual, violent, and serial offenses. 3. To critically analyse and evaluate the central issues surrounding the interaction between offenders and victims, with an emphasis on the motivations for sexual, violent, and serial offenses

Learning Outcomes

Analyse and evaluate the complex issues that criminal investigations face when responding to sexual, violent, and/or serial crimes
2.
Analyse and evaluate the role gender plays in sexual, domestic, and violent offenses.
3.
Analyse and evaluate the different methods of conducting a criminal investigation involving victims of sexual and violent offenses.
4.
Analyse and evaluate the typology of sexual and violent offenders.
5.
Explain the role that forensic psychology plays in the investigation of sexual and violent offences.
