Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The syllabus will consist of a combination of lectures, small group seminars, workshops and individual supervision to support students’ learning and assist them in the application of the knowledge and skills gained from the research methods module. The smaller group seminars will deal with emerging issues related to methodology, data analysis and the relationship to professional practice. Students will have the opportunity to attend a number of ‘master classes’ delivered by practising researchers to highlight some of the opportunities and challenges within research projects and to illustrate the links between theory and practice. The syllabus will be supported by Faculty wide Post Graduate research teaching and learning opportunities including the Research Café seminar series, monthly research seminars and workshops focussing on using computer packages to help organise research data.
Module Overview:
This module aims to develop and assess knowledge, understanding of research methods and skills in the investigation, research and evaluation of issues related to effective and ethical social work practice and policy. It will explore, in-depth, a topic of interest and relevance to contemporary social work policy and practice utilising an empirical or literature based approach.
Additional Information:This module aims to develop and assess knowledge, understanding of research methods and skills in the investigation, research and evaluation of issues related to effective and ethical social work practice and policy. Students are encouraged to draw on research and research methodologies to locate, review and evaluate research finding relevant to Social Work, and to contribute to the understanding of a specific issue through their individual study. This module is linked to the Introduction to Research Methods module which is delivered in the second semester of the first year. The research paper and portfolio permit students to engage in a major project of their choice. All individual assessment tasks must be passed to achieve an overall pass grade on this module. The module is mapped to the knowledge and skills statements (child and family social work and social workers in adult services) The University acknowledges that there may be occasions when a student’s performance in assessment may be severely affected by unforeseen or unexpected circumstances. Such events include sudden acute illness or close personal bereavement. Any extension requests must be discussed with the Module leader prior to the submission date.
