Aims
This module aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of key theoretical concepts relating to specific offending behaviours. Consideration is given to how personality types and mental illnesses can contribute to offending behaviour.
Learning Outcomes

Critically evaluate the literature on offending behaviour, with due consideration to issues of personality and mental health.

Examine the strengths and limitations of research to outline specific topics which need more empirical exploration.

Demonstrate a deep understanding of theoretical concepts and how they link to offending behaviour.

Critically evaluate the use of theory when applied to real case examples.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The module will involve a set of lectures covering key concepts around theory, personality, and mental health. The following are indicative topics:
Theory in relation to specific crimes.
The Dark Triad and its links to criminality
The links between personality disorder and mental illness
Case examples demonstrating theoretical concepts within the Criminal Justice System
The application of personality and mental illness to real criminal cases
Literature review writing skills

It will also help you to develop intercultural and gender awareness, skills in analysis and decision making.

Additional Information:Within this module, students will be assisted to develop employability skills in several areas. This includes intercultural and gender awareness, and skills in analysis and decision making. Furthermore, students will be supported to improve their professional written skills, particularly through evaluating, summarising, and describing complex psychological concepts in a concise and clear manner.
