Aims
1.To prepare health care professionals to prescribe, safely, appropriately and cost-effectively as independent and/or supplementary prescribers, in accordance with both legal and the professional requirements of relevant professional bodies (NMC, HCPC, RPS).
2. To address the specialist educational needs of nurses, and allied health professionals working within specialist areas and with specific client groups.
3. To prepare health care professionals to exercise advanced clinical reasoning, critical thinking and creative problem solving with regard to the unique challenges associated with medicines management among infants, children and young people, the elderly and other specific client groups.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of pharmacodynamics / pharmacokinetics and therapeutics ensuring safe Independent and Supplementary Prescribing practice applying relevant calculations and numeracy skills.
2.
Demonstrate safe and competent prescribing practice of all ten RPS (2021) competencies drawing upon relevant local and national frameworks for medicines use within the scope of prescribing practice.
3.
Critically appraise accountability within prescribing practice as part of the multidisciplinary team drawing upon relevant professional, legal and ethical frameworks.
4.
Demonstrate comprehensive critical reasoning and synthesis in their application of the prescribing process as defined within the prescribing governance domain of A competency framework for all prescribers (RPS, 2021).
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
- RPS Competency framework and relating this to assessment and NMC and HCPC standards for Professional Practice.
- Pharmacology including pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and adverse drug reactions (ADR) reporting these, interactions and reactions.
- Anatomy and physiology as applied to prescribing practice including the unique anatomical and physiological differences across the lifespan.
- Issues relating to prescribing & administration.
- Numeracy relating to prescribing.
- Consultation, Decision-Making and Therapy including diagnosis, management planning & referral.
- Alternatives to pharmacological prescribing
- Influences on and Psychology of Prescribing.
- Shared decision making with an awareness of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion.
- Prescribing in a multi-disciplinary team context. Understand the role and functions of other team members.
- National and local: guidelines, protocols, policies, decision support systems and formulae incorporating budget/cost effectiveness.
- Documentation, prescription writing & record keeping, including information sharing with other professionals, patients/carers and prescribing.
- Evidence-based Practice in relation to non-medical prescribing.
- Clinical Governance & Clinical Audit and Clinical accountability.
- Continuing professional development: incorporating clinical supervision, reflective practice and critical appraisal
- Risk assessment, risk management and medication management
- Legal, Legislative and Ethical Aspects of prescribing (including liability & indemnity).
Module Overview:
Aimed at healthcare professionals registered with the HCPC & NMC, this module enables you to prescribe, safely, appropriately and cost-effectively as independent and/or supplementary prescribers, in accordance with both legal and professional requirements.
The module will prepare you to:
All students who wish to undertake Independent & Supplementary Prescribing also known as V300 Non-Medical Prescribing will have to complete an additional 'North West Non-Medical Prescribing Application form' which will be approved by the prescribing programme team prior to commencement on the independent and supplementary prescribing programme.
Aimed at healthcare professionals registered with the HCPC & NMC, this module enables you to prescribe, safely, appropriately and cost-effectively as independent and/or supplementary prescribers, in accordance with both legal and professional requirements.
The module will prepare you to:
- complete an assessment of a patient/client/service users whilst developing a management plan in relation to their diagnosis/differential diagnosis.
- complete an episode of care through prescribing or deprescribing safety
All students who wish to undertake Independent & Supplementary Prescribing also known as V300 Non-Medical Prescribing will have to complete an additional 'North West Non-Medical Prescribing Application form' which will be approved by the prescribing programme team prior to commencement on the independent and supplementary prescribing programme.
Additional Information:
APPRENTICE LEARNERS ONLY: For students undertaking this module through an apprenticeship route 'online' hours will be added to the module delivery time to support the learner. An additional 24 hours of online delivery will be allocated to the module. The allocation of additional 'online' delivery hours enables the learner to be facilitated to undertake a series of activities either through directed asynchronous online learning, engagement with literature and resources, discussion boards, library and IT sessions and academic skills development, assessment preparation time and development of learning towards the achievement of the KSB's.
Variance: All components of the module must be passed including those contained within the practice competency. The examination element (weighted at 40%) has a pass mark of 80%. The numeracy assessment (written examination) within the practice / competency element has a pass mark of 100% (Approved on 18/01/2024)
