Aims

To provide students with a broad critical understanding of the different paradigms and perspectives on substance (mis)use and relevant policy in relation to crime and criminal justice. This will be achieved by the module being broken down into three distinctive teaching blocks. Block 1 aims to set a critical socio-cultural scene in order for students to build up a comprehensive picture of drug and alcohol use within contemporary capitalist society. Block 2 aims to develop students understanding of drug policy and critically consider the rationale and motivations that mould policy developments within this sphere. Block 3 aims to develop students knowledge of how drug and alcohol users are responded to within a criminal justice context. This involves a detailed consideration of a number of interventions and treatment programmes that are currently utilised.

The module deconstructs the drug and alcohol status quo in order for students to acknowledge the complexities and contradictions that exist within this sphere. It allows students to explore the objectives of drug and alcohol policies and to consider these in relation to the past, present and future, receiving formative feedback as they progress through the interactive sessions. Finally, the module affords students an insight into the practical implications of drug interventions and the reality of rehabilitative methods of addressing problematic drug use.
