Aims

To prepare community children’s nurses to practice safely and effectively as an autonomous  specialist practitioner in line with NMC (2022) Standards of proficiency for specialist practice qualification.

To prepare community children’s nurses to critically examine effective functioning in a multi-professional and evolving health care context and consider political, economic, socio-cultural and technological issues within community service delivery.

To prepare community children’s nurses to exercise sophisticated communication skills to establish and maintain effective and therapeutic relationships in complex and challenging areas of practice to support shared decision making and maximise health outcomes  

To prepare community children's nurses to apply policy, legislation, ethical practice and leadership to promote integrated collaborative strategies which support population health.  

 

Learning Outcomes

1.
Critically explore the concepts of autonomy and leadership in meeting the demands of specialist community practice in community children's nursing. 
2.
Systematically analyse the role of legal, ethical and regulatory frameworks in delivering and managing complex specialist community care for children, young people and their families.  
3.
Formulate effective collaborative and communicative strategies to support shared decision making and maximise health outcomes  
4.
Synthesise quality improvement measures to promote safe culturally competent care in challenging and unpredictable situations. 
5.
Demonstrate competence in relation to the NMC professional standards for specialist practice community children's nursing.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The outline syllabus is adaptive and responsive to current issues and priorities in community health. Content includes but is not limited to;
  • Contemporary policy and legislative context
  • Advancing the role of the specialist practitioner
  • Integrated, collaborative and partnership working in the community
  • Case load management
  • Proactive and supportive transition from birth to adult services
  • Sophisticated communication skills
  • Supporting mental health and wellbeing
  • Integrated care coordination
  • Supporting positive behaviour change to improve health outcomes
  • Child and adult safeguarding
Module Overview:
To help the student to maximise learning opportunities and experiences within specialist community children's nursing practice. There is a necessity for the student to be exposed to wider, complex issues within the community and how to strategically plan for care delivery.

This module has a  PASS/FAIL competency practice assessment. This is assessed in the practice assessment document (PAD)

Please note students are only permitted two attempts at the practice competency element 7031PAHCOM.
