Aims

The aim of this module is to explore the complexity of global sustainable challenges and the role of organisations and society in our interconnected environment. Students will review concepts of sustainable and responsible management in the global business environment, recognising the impact of individual and organisational decision-making on social, environmental, and economic contexts. Students will critically appraise the international sustainability agenda through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and raise their awareness of climate change and carbon emissions reductions through Carbon Literacy training.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a critical understanding of the role of SDGs in business functions and governance.

Critically analyse businesses practices and their responsible decision-making to understand the wider impact to people, planet and profits.
3.
Demonstrate critical understanding of the frameworks and theories relating to sustainable and responsible management in the global business environment.
4.
Demonstrate personal reflection on Carbon Literacy learning and commitment to carbon reductions.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Systemic thinking

Understanding complex systems and interrelationships between the numerous aspects of our complex global system. For example, appreciating the context of Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA) within the world, whilst also aiming to meet the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1-17).

Societal and dynamic principles

The principles of taking, assigning and having responsibility for addressing the SDGs.

Changing Landscape

Concepts, frameworks and models such as: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR); Triple Bottom Line; Quadruple Bottom Line.

Environmental Social Governance

The move from business accountability to measurability, including Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) Models and frameworks; ESG in the boardroom.

The Circular economy (SDG9, SDG12)

Decoupling economic activity from finite resource consumption.

People (SDG1, SDG2, SDG3, SDG4, SDG5, SDG8 SDG10)

The impact of business on people in developing and developed countries, including aspects such as: Poverty; Safety; Modern-day slavery; Worker’s Rights; Land Access.

Environment (SDG6, SDG13, SDG14, SDG15)

The impact of business and consumption on the planet, drawing on examples from Plastics; Pollution; Waste; Deforestation; Loss of Biodiversity.

Businesses with Purpose (SDG17)

Transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities, and planet.

Carbon Literacy training (SDG7, SDG11, SDG13, SDG16)

Understanding climate change and individual/business impacts of our everyday activities.
