Aims

This module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to locate, select, critically evaluate, and make appropriate use of digital information related to their programme of study at Master’s level, while developing their autonomy as learners. This module will also develop students’ familiarity of sourcing, manipulating and reporting numerical information, which also includes data practice guidelines, such as GDPR. Through this module, students will develop an understanding of the interrelationship between traditional academic literacies and the role of new technologies to support digital literacy practices. In summary, this module aims to develop students’ academic and digital literacies to support their studies as well as their professional development as a responsible citizen in a digital society.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate the ability to locate, select, critically evaluate, and synthesise information relevant to the programme of study from a range of appropriate sources.

Appreciate numerical data and understand how to manipulate and present numerical information effectively.

Make critical and ethical use of appropriate software and digital technologies for academic and professional purposes.

Make use of research terminology and academic conventions appropriate for Master’s level study.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Accessing and critically evaluating a range of business and management sources

Professional, ethical and critical use of information and communication technologies, including large language models

Searching academic and industry databases

Selecting, evaluating and summarising information from primary studies

Synthesising information from a range of sources

Familiarity with numerical information and how to use relevant software for data manipulation

Ethical data practices and GDPR

Selecting appropriate topics for research

Module Overview:
This module aims to develop students’ academic and digital literacies to support their studies as well as their professional development as a responsible citizen in a digital society. It will also develop students’ familiarity of sourcing, manipulating and reporting numerical information, which also includes data practice guidelines, such as GDPR. Students will develop an understanding of the interrelationship between traditional academic literacies and the role of new technologies to support digital literacy practices. Academic skills development is embedded in the module to help students adapt to a new environment.
Additional Information:
This module is designed as a transition module to ensure all students have the necessary skills and knowledge to conduct Master’s level assignments and research, in using both written and numerical information through digital mediums.  Academic skills development is embedded in the module and events provided to help students adapt to a new environment.
