Aims

This module aims to provide students with a detailed knowledge of how to write and produce audio-visual work, which is researched using appropriate methods.

To accomplish these aims we will explore:

1. Research methods and ethics in critical and creative practice

 2. Understanding and using scholarly sources

3. Skills for film-related practiced based research

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
This module is designed as an introduction to research methods in film studies and filmmaking. Students will cover a range of methodological, critical, and practice-based issues likely to arise in any research project that students might undertake at postgraduate level (including practice-based project). Students will be introduced to research methods for critical and creative practice. Students will learn how to find and assess the usefulness of primary sources in paper and moving-image archives, how to contextualise with secondary research, and present research in essay form.  Students will develop their critical and creative practice skills at postgraduate level.  The module will explore the nature of creative and critical research methods in Film Studies and introduce some of the technical skills needed to tackle creative projects (digital competencies in basic camera, sound and editing operations).
Module Overview:
Equips you with the skills required to undertake research projects at postgraduate level. Areas of study will include approaches to archival work, research methodologies, interview skills, and craft skills.
Additional Information:
This module provides a framework for students to develop a critical awareness of film studies and filmmaking providing the analytical, scholarly, and practical skills to produce a research project. Students will use and explore critical and creative practice tools to investigate their object of study.
