Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
In this module, students will learn about organising film festivals through: (a) acting as film programmers/curators by viewing, rating, and selecting films to show at the LJMU MA Short Film Festival; (b) preparing promotional material, such as trailers for the festival website and for social media; (c) working as PR professionals by preparing press releases and liaising with media outlets; (d) communicating with filmmakers and hosting online Q&A; (e) organising and hosting the live screenings. They will also engage with current scholarship on film festivals, distribution and exhibition, via lectures and workshops on aspects of film festival, distribution and exhibition research, including the history and typology of film festivals; film festivals as events; film festivals and the public sphere.
Module Overview:
Exploring Film Festivals, Distribution and Exhibition examines the different ways in which film circulates. It considers the historical and contemporary significance of film festivals both in assigning value to film (through awards) and in providing an alternative distribution network, while also assessing the significance and function of film programming in festivals. The students are offered a unique opportunity to experience all stages in the organisation of an actual, outward facing film festival (online and in person) and use their reflective capacity and academic insights to critically reflect upon it
Additional Information:
Exploring Film Festivals, Distribution and Exhibition combines practice and theory. Students learn by doing all key jobs required in putting an actual film festival together and critically reflecting on their experiences, while also studying about other film festivals and different approaches to studying and researching them. A field trip to a UK film festival is organised, if possible, to offer students additional insights into the film festival experience. Industry professionals (film festival programmers, distribution and/or exhibition professionals) are invited as guest lectures and film festival jurors
